Frequently asked questions

How do I decode a VIN for free?

Enter all 17 characters, scan the barcode or upload a photo. DECODE.AUTOS then identifies the vehicle and displays available data.

Where can I find the VIN on a car?

The VIN is commonly found at the lower driver-side windshield, on the driver-door label, registration or some insurance documents.

Can I scan the barcode or use a photo?

Yes. Use the camera to scan the VIN barcode or choose an existing VIN image from your photo gallery.

What is the difference between NIV and VIN?

NIV is the French abbreviation for numéro d’identification du véhicule. VIN means Vehicle Identification Number. Both refer to the same 17-character identifier.

What information can a VIN provide?

Depending on the vehicle and sources: year, make, model, trim, engine, transmission, drivetrain, wheelbase, dimensions, safety equipment, plant, country of manufacture, recalls and more.

Can I check recalls and some risks for free?

The free report combines available open data and shortcuts to official checks such as recalls, stolen-vehicle lookup and selected U.S. checks.

Is every vehicle fully detailed?

No. Data depth varies by manufacturer, year, market and source. DECODE.AUTOS shows available data and does not guess missing fields.

Does the free report replace CARFAX?

No. It provides useful open data and official checks, but it does not replace a full commercial history report that may include accidents, claims, ownership, odometer and service history.
